The Avery Dennison High Heat fastener solutions are a PA66 family of automotive ties that are formulated to withstand operating temperatures of up to 150°C. The physical characteristics of these high heat ties are identical to our current automotive fasteners made with PA66IMHS resin. These ties have been heat age tested for 1,000 hours at 150 degrees Celsius, and for more than 4,000 hours at 135 degrees Celsius, without any compromise to performance.
Several trends in the automotive industry are driving engine compartment temperatures higher:
- Proliferation of turbo chargers
- Proliferation of electric vehicles
- More electronics under the hood
- Engine downsizing and shrinking space in the engine compartment
Currently, the only plastic solutions (PA46 and PEEK) for fastening in high heat areas are expensive and require different processing methods than PA66 fasteners. PA46 can become brittle at temperatures close to 150°C. PA46 is also more hygroscopic than PA66, making it more prone to failures. PA46 based fasteners have been known to cost almost three times that of PA66IMHS fasteners. Metal fasteners are also expensive and are typically not offered in the variety of profiles that plastic fasteners are.
